What is the Brendan House?
" Work on Brendan House, a planned 12-bed long-term care home for people with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) or other cognitive and physical disabilities, is presently underway at 4079 Sound Avenue in Riverhead, NY.
The property was donated last year to New Beginnings Community Center for Traumatic Brain Injury, a nonprofit outpatient rehab center in Medford. As envisioned, the new facility will be staffed around the clock with nurses and other aides for residents. Renovation of the home is expected to cost $200,000. The group has already received numerous donations, yet more donations are always needed.
The home will allow victims of TBI to live independently while still receiving the care they need. A 2012 Februrary special report in the Riverhead News-Review found that few centeres like the Brendan House actually exist to aid people who are in need of long-term care but are too young for assisted living facilities, including children like Michael Hubbard, a Riverhead teenager who was severly burned in a gel-candle accident in May 2011. Why did we choose this cause?
When we set out to make our very first BBP Spring Festival a reality, at first we lacked a organization we wished to support. After receiving a email from our principal at the time regarding a cause that was connected to our high school, we were determined that to make this cause, The Brendan House, our charity. The reason this cause was so etching we so strongly wished to support was because the house itself is being named after a alumnus of our high school who suffered from a traumatic brain injury. As a result of complications from his injury, Brendan Aykroyd passed away. After hearing his story, and meeting his parents, the Brendan House quickly became a cause close to our hearts, and thus the BBP Spring Festival has now become an annual fundraiser for this facility.
How you can help:
You can donate money directly to the Brendan House project through their website (above), or you can join us the day of the BBP Spring Festival & Craft Fair in order to raise money and awareness for this outstanding cause. If you are a talented art/craft vendor, we would appreciate you renting a booth space for the day. It is a great way to make money while giving back to the community. The Brendan House is also looking for volunteers to do things such a plant gardens and clean the house. You can go to nbli.org for more information.
