iLead: What is it?Since the foundation of the iLead 21 leadership program in Bayport Blue Point High School, we have been able to use and enchance our leadership skills through project based learning. What this means is that instead of learning from a teacher in a typical classroom setting, we work with our iCoach and our peers to grow as individuals and leaders while we run projects that give back to our school, the community and even the world.
"iLead 21 is a three year, progressive leadership development program that focuses on 5 key leadership principles. Students form a company and progress through a series of leadership problem-based leadership development tasks. As we complete tasks, we move up through 21 levels of the Leadership Development Ladder and refine the skills needed to lead ourselves, and lead the world. As iLeaders, we join a closed networking site to collaborate virtually with leaders from other schools, and to interact with and learn from established leaders from diverse for- and non-profit industries. Origins of the Craft FairWhen I was in seventh grade, I was given a gift that set me on the path that led to the person I am today. This gift, a jewelry kit, led to the creation of my own business which is centered around unique accessories as well as giving back to the community. After a few months of working with jewelry, I expanded into the world of duct tape accessories, and it was from here that my business took off. I began running birth parties, girl scout meetings and library programs where I taught children how to utilize their creativity to create their own unique accessories.
While my business brought me joy, I knew I wanted to take it further. After seeing an advertisement for a local craft fair, inspiration struck. Running a craft fair fundraiser would not only be a good way to raise money for a local cause, but would also provide people in the community with a fun-filled day. I am proud that I was chosen to be in iLead for it provided me with the avenue to make my dream a reality. With the help and support of my fellow iLeaders, I was able to turn my vision into a successful community event. Laura Chant Event Coordinator Class of 2014 |
